TEAK (tectona), also called Jati is a genus of tropical hardwood trees in the family Verbenaceae, native to South East Asia and is commonly found as a component of monsoon forest vegetation. They are large trees, growing to 30-40 meters tall. The word teak originated from the word “tekku” in Malayalam, the language of Kerala state in south India.
Teak wood has been preferred by boat builders for centuries as it is easily worked and has natural oils that make it suitable for use in exposed locations. It is durable even when not treated with oil or varnish. These same oils also make teak wood resistant to insects and rot. Teak has been used throughout Asia and India for centuries in the construction of boats, railways, doors, window frames, columns and beams in old houses which is where the majority of the recycled wood is sourced.

While browsing our catalog you will see the various finishes we have to offer:
Color
Natural or “Raw” where we just apply a coat of bees wax to the surface and when left exposed to the elements the wood will take on a silver appearance over time. By applying oil to the wood a golden brown coloring is brought out. Dark Stains which are applied at the factory and are used to give the wood a more contemporary look.

Texture
Rustic finish is where the wood has a raw, natural texture and feel to it using the imperfections in the wood to add character to the piece and creating a casual feel only solid wood construction can offer.
Smooth finish is accomplished when the wood has been sanded smooth and highlights the grain of the wood thus creating a more elegant feel.
